Taipei, Taiwan----May. 18th, 2004----CyberLink Corp. (5203.TWO), a leading developer of digital video software and training solutions, has received widespread Japanese praise for support of Content Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM) on the PC.
Leading DVD player software, CyberLink PowerDVD, is currently the only CPRM-enabled software product in the Japanese market. Inclusion of the protection format in CyberLink's PowerDVD lets users watch their CPRM-protected content on their computers.
CPRM is an extremely hot topic in Japan, as awareness grows for protection of digital television (TV) content in the lead up to the complete introduction of digital terrestrial broadcasting by 2011. Many television stations, including NHK, are incorporating copy control information (CCI) within their digital TV programs. The stations plan to incorporate CCI into TV programming to allow home users to record digital programs as regulated by the stations. For a program with CCI which specifies "copy-once", a home user?s DVD-RW or DVD-RAM disc containing the program must be protected by CPRM to prevent creation of additional gererations of copies, and the user's player needs to support CPRM in order to play the disc properly.
Content Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM) is a content protection standard developed by the 4C (IBM, Panasonic, Intel, Toshiba) group and is designed to prevent unauthorized copying of content and distribution via portable storage media such as DVDs and flash media storage. CPRM adds a Media Identifier and Media Key Block to the protected media. A CPRM-enabled device or software can read the identifier and key block and then decrypt the data for playback. Users are prevented from playing protected content using hardware or software that is not CPRM-enabled.
CPRM-enabled PowerDVD offers a legitimate means to play CPRM-protected discs on PCs, while protecting the rights of content owners by preventing the playing of illegally copied content.
Copy-once programs and content copy protection are already common features of DVD and HDD recorders in Japan. Until now, discs recorded in compliance with the CPRM standard could only be played on the original consumer DVD recorder (standalone DVD player) used to create the disc, and were not able to be played on a PC. CyberLink solves this problem by delivering the world?s first solution for playing CPRM-protected content on a computer. PowerDVD allows greater flexibility by recognizing the CPRM-protected content, while preventing unauthorized use of copyright. PowerDVD is currently the only DVD solution that is CPRM-enabled.
"Users worldwide already enjoy the superior audio-video features of PowerDVD," said Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink. "With our world-first support of CPRM, we are leading the trend in protecting digital broadcasting content, especially in the Japanese market. With PowerDVD users can now enjoy watching their CPRM-protected discs on their own PCs."
