CyberLink announces full video support for Panasonic 4.7GB DVD-RAM

MILPITAS, CA (October 31, 2000) - Panasonic and CyberLink announced today that CyberLink's complete line of high-performance, easy-to-use DVD and MPEG-2 video capture, editing, production and playback solutions provide seamless support for Panasonic 4.7GB DVD-RAM drives and media users. With the company's advanced video and audio technology users can produce DV and MPEG- 1 or 2 video output that can store and play back up to 2 hours of theater quality video on rewritable, removable DVD-RAM discs.

CyberLink's personal and professional video authoring and production software products include PowerVCR II, PowerDVD and Medi@Show. PowerVCR II offers a superior alternative to television time shifting with a VCR and hardware-based MPEG-1/2 encoding technologies for real-time video recording. PowerDVD features unrivaled functions that allow desktop and notebook users to view high quality video and media-rich DVD contents on the PC. Medi@Show allows the user to directly import media clips with ease from a multitude of sources including PC camera, scanner or camcorder. Then users can edit, arrange, author, store and playback the files in exciting multimedia presentations. Used with Panasonic's DVD-RAM drives, completed feature-length (2 hour) business, educational and home videos can be stored on a 4.7GB single-sided bare disc. Videos can be played back on Panasonic's DVD-RAM drives, newer-generation DVD-ROM drives as well as recently announced DVD players and DVD recorders.

"CyberLink's advanced software products really allow users to turn their desktop or notebook computer into a very comprehensive, very easy to use, very economic digital video center," Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink Corp, emphasized. "There's no longer a division between computer and consumer technology. Business and home videographers want to produce video that has the same quality they see at the theater. With Panasonic's 4.7GB DVD-RAM drives and media these people can store and playback exciting, educational, informational and persuasive digital content on their PCs, notebooks, TVs and even stream the video over the Internet. Unlike videotape, the content quality doesn't deteriorate no matter how many times you use the bare disc media."

PowerDVD incorporates a proprietary MPEG-2 video decoding engine that supports full 720 x 480 resolution for NTSC video playback and 720 x 576 for PAL. The 5.1-channel or 2-channel Dolby Digital audio decoded streams are sent through S/PDIF to the external Dolby Digital decoder for high fidelity decoding and playback. PowerDVD also supports VR allowing users to record video, save them in DVD-RAMs and later playback the recorded video by using PowerDVD. The latest version of PowerDVD includes features such as i-Power service that provides users with direct access to unlimited multimedia resources on the Internet as well as multiple skin selections, bookmark viewer functions, close caption, multiple subtitles , screen capture and many other functions to maximize DVD enjoyment on the PC.

PowerVCR II offers a high-performance, economic alternative to the VCR and hardware encoding technologies. Taking advantage of today's faster PC's, CyberLink provides users with the ability to record a program onto DVD-RAM media, leave for a period of time, then come back and watch what they missed, while the program is still being recorded. In addition, users can record programs in real-time in MPEG-1 or 2 format for high quality, easy and low-cost archiving.

At all four stages of the digital imaging process, Medi@Show is a valuable software tool that can bring everyone's digital files to life. Medi@Show allows user to directly import media clips with ease from almost any video or imaging source. They can quickly and easily arrange their files using the drag & drop method. After the files have been placed, Medi@Show lets the user carry out their creative editing work with a full range of authoring, editing and effects tools. When they are satisfied with the multimedia presentation they can store it to DVD-RAM for later presentation or streaming over the Internet.

"This is one of the most complete, feature rich and robust DVD software product lines available," Jeff Saake, Group General Manager, Panasonic Industrial Company, Computer Technologies Group, said in commenting about CyberLink's products. " They offer software-based video, TV, presentation and still photo capture, editing, authoring and playback solutions that epitomize the best in computer and consumer electronics convergence for business and personal DVD video production. Used with our rewritable DVD drives, consumers have an affordable solution for turning content from any source into very professional interactive video."

The Panasonic DVD-RAM drive combines the ease of use and random access of a hard drive with transfer rates of up to 22.16Mb/sec and 95msec access times. A versatile solution, the drive will also read from discs currently accepted by CD-ROM, CD Audio, CD-R, CD-RW and video CD drives, as well as DVD video, DVD-ROM and DVD-R drives.
