CyberLink, Intel and Axtronics Jointly Announce Asia’s First Linux Web-Enabled DVD Set-Top Box Solution

November 28, 2000----Taipei, Taiwan----CyberLink, Intel and Axtronics jointly announced an Intel/Linux based DVD-ready Set-Top Box solution at a press conference held in Taipei today. This solution features the best price performance ratio allowing complete DVD/VCD entertainment, and broadband Internet access. "By joint forces from CyberLink, Intel and Axtronics, we have provided a readied DVD entertainment solution for IA developers," said Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink Corp., "Home theaters and information appliances are coming trends for homes and this solution will serve as the most cost-effective way for IA developers to speed up product time-to-market."

This solution is jointly developed by CyberLink, Intel, and Axtronics, as a DVD ready platform for next generation information appliances. Designed as an Intel/Linux Based Platform, this solution features CyberLink PowerDVD-Linux, embedded Intel Architecture and the Linux platform developed by Axtronics to run applications that are normally only associated with the PC. Thus, CyberLink, with its already established and world acclaimed Windows based PowerDVD software program, is able to support this total solution for IA developers with its PowerDVD-Linux software.

Eric Jao, Senior Product Manager of Intel sees the convergence of Home entertainment devices and information appliances as one system: The Home Internet Center. "The Home Internet Center will be capable of delivering video across broadband, exchange information, and allows interactivity, digital video recording, and video conferencing." Said Eric Jao "In the near future, Intel will offer more advanced embedded solutions for Internet Appliances allowing developers to shorten their product development phase and provide better products to meet tomorrows needs."

"In addition to being able to playback DVD, VCD, MP3 and CD-ROMs, this solution features broadband Internet access, and modularized software architecture that can be maintained and serviced on-line," said Frank Wu, President of Axtronics.

The first customer to use this solution in a consumer entertainment appliance is nReady, with its id3300 Web-enabled DVD Set-Top Box. Available in February 2001, this affordable and powerful appliance with a telephone line or broadband connection, lets consumers enjoy interactive home banking, on-line shopping, digital audio-visual entertainment and other e-commerce services provided on the Internet from the comfort of your home.

PowerDVD-Linux

PowerDVD-Linux provides the best solution to IA developers due to the fact that it is a pure software program that can playback DVD titles at a Full Frame rate, with minimal CPU requirements (only Intel Celeron 333 and above needed). In addition, PowerDVD-Linux also has the ability to playback VCD, Audio CD, MP3, DAT, and many other multimedia file formats. Many of the advanced features on the Windows based version, like dynamic skin selection, multiple bookmark functions, support for remote control interface, etc., are also available on PowerDVD-Linux. PowerDVD-Linux also supports numerous video acceleration chipsets under Linux, and its Code size is minimized to 600 KB. PowerDVD-Linux is also a great solution due to the fact that it can operate under various different Linux operating systems (such as Red Hat, Caldera, SuSE, and Corel) and supports both X-Free and non X-Free solutions.
