Digital Media Software Leader CyberLink Acquires ImageChef to Further Enhance Cloud and App-Based Creative Solutions Enjoyed by Millions of Consumers and Prosumers Worldwide

Acquisition Further Strengthens CyberLink’s Position as the World’s Leading Independent Digital Media Software Provider Spanning PCs, Smart Devices, Tablets and Cloud-based Platforms

San FranciscoMay 20, 2014—Worldwide digital media software leader CyberLink today announced the acquisition of San Francisco-based ImageChef, Inc., a provider of rich collage and text web tools through Web portals and mobile apps for millions of consumers globally. Offering a creative community of over 10 million users with access to hundreds of popular photo tools, text and memes, ImageChef lets consumers easily create memorable images in minutes to send to friends and family.  A unique 3D text tool lets users instantly insert visually stunning messages in the sand, on a billboard and more. Through its cloud and app-based solution, ImageChef lets users drive content creation online or in-app.  This acquisition is highly complementary and expected to drive additional growth for CyberLink while further expanding its business model beyond the PC and into smart phones, tablets and cloud-based platforms.

With this acquisition in place, CyberLink stands as the only independent digital media software provider with a complete 360 degree solution portfolio especially for consumers and prosumers – from creating and editing to sharing, watching and storing photos, videos and entertainment from one integrated platform.  As other larger digital media providers moving their focus to enterprise markets, CyberLink remains dedicated to the burgeoning global consumer/prosumer market, providing the easiest-to-use and most accessible digital media solutions that can be used across all devices.

“We are changing the way people interact with digital media by offering all capabilities in one uniquely integrated platform,” said Dr. Jau Huang, founder, chairman and CTO of CyberLink. “Millions of consumers worldwide trust our powerful yet very intuitive tools to express themselves with selfies and photo or video creations shared through social media every day.  The addition to our award-winning portfolio of ImageChef tools to personalize memes and other images, will further enhance the digital media experience of our combined users, making it even more creative and fun to create and share photos and videos as well as enjoy entertainment at anytime, anywhere and from any device or platform.”

This acquisition fits perfectly with CyberLink’s highly successful strategy to expand its product offering into a complete set of digital media solutions covering all types of smart devices and available across all sales channels.   Initially built around flagship PowerDVD media player and powerful creative Director Suite, a complete photo and video editing solution, the consumer platform has grown into a comprehensive ecosystem that meets all creative, sharing and playback needs.  It includes DirectorZone, a creative cloud-based community of nearly 4 million members where over 400,000 user-generated templates and tools have been shared tens of millions of times, and MoovieLive, a community where 2 million people share their passion for movies.  CyberLink’s tools have recently been expanded into the cloud and a fast-growing family of apps that run on smart phones and tablets.

“CyberLink has built a truly unique and compelling ecosystem of high performing and intuitive digital media tools. The kind that are used by consumers and prosumers,” said Dr. Jon Peddie, President of Jon Peddie Research. “Regardless of their skill level, or interest in technology, people are consuming large amounts of digital content and expressing themselves through photos and personal videos every day. CyberLink has cleverly extended its imaging technologies into mobile devices and social media to address those needs, and the acquisition of ImageChef fits perfectly into the company’s strategy.”

“ImageChef’s mission from the beginning is to enable anyone to express themselves visually —  instantly.”  said Rolf Rando, founder of ImageChef. “It has been amazing seeing what our users have created and how the content sharing features of the ImageChef community have multiplied creative possibilities. We are excited to be joining CyberLink and see how that mission can be furthered with access to CyberLink’s incredible team and technology base from advanced photo editing to 4K video."
