Facial Recognition for Casino Self-Exclusion and Security

Overview

An international casino operator needed a more reliable way to keep banned individuals from entering its properties. Each casino maintained a Blocklist, but as the list grew, it became more difficult for security personnel to recognize everyone during entry screening

As self-exclusion programs continue to expand, gaming operators must manage increasingly large watchlists. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported approximately 7,400 self-exclusion enrollment requests in 2024, compared with approximately 5,500 in 2023.¹ While specific to Pennsylvania, this growth highlights the challenge of enforcing exclusion policies through manual identification alone.

At the operator's properties, some banned individuals occasionally passed through entry screening undetected and were identified only after surveillance footage was reviewed. This delayed response increased investigative workload for security personnel and created potential compliance risks related to exclusion policy enforcement. The operator deployed FaceMe® Security with Blocklist screening across its properties, integrating with its existing Hanwha Wisenet WAVE video management environment. Recognition alerts are delivered to the security desk through Notification Monitor, with U Messenger available for designated notifications.

The Challenge: Managing Casino Entry

Casino personnel were responsible for age verification and checking guests against the property's list of banned individuals. The process relied on security personnel recognizing people from photographs, making consistent enforcement more difficult as the Blocklist grew.

The operator needed to:

  • Identify banned individuals during entry.
  • Give security personnel immediate notice of a potential match.
  • Reduce reliance on manually recognizing faces from photographs.
  • Maintain a consistent process as the Blocklist and security team changed.

The Solution: Automated Blocklist Screening

FaceMe Security compares faces captured at casino entry points against the property's Blocklist. When a potential match is detected, the security desk receives an immediate notification for review.

Security personnel can then verify the potential match and determine the appropriate response according to the property's established procedures.

Designed for Responsible Use

The casino controls who is included on its Blocklist, why individuals are included, how long related records are retained, and which personnel can access the information. Matches can be reviewed by authorized personnel before action is taken.

The deployment was designed to support responsible gaming programs while allowing the casino to maintain full control over data governance, retention policies, and access permissions.

The Result: Consistent Screening Across Properties

By automating Blocklist screening at entry points, FaceMe Security gives casino personnel a scalable and reliable way to identify banned individuals across multiple properties. Real-time alerts allow security staff to review matches and respond according to established procedures, supporting more consistent enforcement of the operator’s exclusion policies.
