Problems and Challenges

  • With the promotion of digitalization within the Japanese government, the risk of exposing classified government and personal information has increased, prompting revisions to information security-related laws. One significant regulation stipulates that public servants are required to utilize two-factor authentication when accessing citizens' "My Number" (equivalent to a social security number) information on government computers.
  • While most government agencies had already implemented two-factor authentication, the two factors were passwords and identification cards, both of which are highly susceptible to theft and misuse.
  • When considering biometric authentication technology as an alternate factor, it was determined that accuracy was extremely important due to the large number of public servants. Budget constraints for hardware and software upgrades, system compatibility, and recognition efficiency were also key considerations.

Our Solution

  • A leading Japanese Information system service provider integrated FaceMe® SDK into their 2-factor authentication login software for government applications. When public servants need to access government computers containing sensitive information or to unlock the screen, they must undergo facial recognition identity verification in addition to entering account passwords or using identification cards.
  • For government computers that traditionally allow access with shared account passwords, the introduction of facial recognition records each user's login, enhancing the traceability of actual users. This further strengthens protection of confidential information.
