Which Braces Types Can You Preview? How Accurate Is It?
A braces filter works from your text description, so the styles you can preview are the ones you can describe. These are the four that come out most convincingly:
- Metal braces — stainless-steel brackets and wire, the most visually distinct option and the easiest for AI to render recognisably. Prompt with the band color you're considering ("silver braces with purple bands").
- Ceramic braces — tooth-colored or clear brackets. Subtler in a photo, so the preview mainly answers "how noticeable would these be from talking distance?"
- Clear aligners — a smooth transparent shell rather than brackets. Ask for "clear aligner trays" instead of "braces", or the AI will add brackets you didn't want.
- colored elastic bands — the detail most people actually want to test. Generate the same photo several times with different band colors and compare them side by side.
What the preview can't tell you. A braces filter is a visualisation of the hardware on your teeth as they look today. It is not an orthodontic simulation. It won't show tooth movement, how your bite will change, how your lips will sit over the brackets, or the treatment time any of it takes. Bracket size and placement are approximations, not what your orthodontist would bond to your teeth. Use it to narrow down the look you like, then take the images to your orthodontist as a conversation starter rather than a plan.
If Your Braces Preview Doesn't Look Right
Most disappointing results come from the source photo rather than the AI. Work through these in order:
- The braces landed on your lips or gums. Zoom in before you brush and use the eraser to pull the mask back to the tooth surface only. A tight, accurate mask matters more than the prompt.
- Nothing changed, or the teeth look smoothed over. Your mouth is probably too closed or too small in frame. Retake the shot straight-on, in even light, with a wide smile and teeth fully visible.
- The braces look painted on rather than three-dimensional. Add material words to the prompt — "shiny metal brackets with a thin archwire" gives the model more to work with than "braces".
- The color is wrong. Name the part you mean: brackets, archwire and elastic bands can each be colored differently, and a bare color word gets applied unpredictably.
- You ran out of credits. Both PhotoDirector and MyEdit meter AI Replace; wait for the daily allowance to reset or move to a paid plan if you're generating many variations.

Treat it as a styling preview, not a clinical one. A braces filter renders brackets and bands onto your teeth as they look today — it doesn't model tooth movement, bite correction or how your lips will rest over the hardware, and bracket size and spacing are approximations.
